About the dish:
Hunter's Gold: While gold may have been abundant for some, food was scarce in the goldfields of Central Otago in the late 1800's, with supplies often taking weeks to arrive by wagon or coach. Scurvy was common due to a diet of mostly flour and tea. Damper was often consumed for every meal with any other staples the miners could find. Gold, any miner will tell you, is where you find it – as the Cornish miners said, ‘Where it be, there it be’. This rustic dish is our tribute to these hardy souls.
